At fourteen Dino Zoff, a boy from a small village in Friuli, had trials with Inter and Juventus. They turned him down: he was about one metre sixty. At forty he would captain Italy to the world title.
From Mariano del Friuli
Zoff was born on 28 February 1942 in Mariano del Friuli, a village of about 1,500 people today. He started at Marianese.
At 14 Inter and Juventus turned him down because he was too short. Then he grew 22 centimetres and Udinese signed him.
The long road
On 24 September 1961, aged 19, he made his Serie A debut for Udinese against Fiorentina. Then Mantova (1963-67), Napoli (1967-72) and Juventus (1972-83).
The record and the World Cup
With Italy he went 1,142 minutes in a row without conceding: a record for national teams. He played 112 games for Italy.
In 1982, at 40, he won the World Cup as captain: the oldest winner in the history of the tournament.
What you can learn if you're a goalkeeper
The tips below are ideas taken from this story, not promises: every career is different.
- A failed trial at 14 doesn't decide your career: bodies grow at their own pace.
- For a goalkeeper experience counts enormously: many improve with age.
- Starting from a small village and a small club is fine: what matters is playing and growing.
