As a boy Javier Zanetti was told he didn't have the physique to become a footballer. Meanwhile he helped his father, a bricklayer, and delivered milk. He ended his career with 858 games for Inter, the club record.
Dock Sud
Zanetti was born in Buenos Aires, in the Dock Sud neighbourhood, on 10 August 1973. His father was a bricklayer, his mother a cleaner. Independiente's youth academy rejected him: they thought he lacked the physique.
Working and playing
He didn't stop: he worked with his father on building sites, delivered milk and helped in a relative's shop. And he played. In 1992-93 he was at Talleres de Remedios de Escalada, in the second division: 33 games.
Then Banfield, in the first division, from 1993 to 1995: 66 games and 4 goals. He ran all over the pitch and never stopped.
Inter
In 1995 Inter signed him. He played right-back, but also in midfield or on the left: wherever he was needed. He became captain in 2001 and stayed captain until 2014.
In 2010 he won everything in a single season: league, Coppa Italia and Champions League, the treble. He played 145 games for Argentina. Inter retired his number 4 shirt.
After playing
Since 2014 he has been Inter's vice-president: from rejected boy to director of the club he played for more than anyone.
